No excuses for not writing in such a long time. Just been too flat out, too lazy, too everything. But enough about that...
Have to start with last night at the Metro in Sydney, where I witnessed the most amazing show I've seen in AGES. John Butler Trio. Holy shit. They played for like 2.5 hours and it was as though time flew by and stood still at the same time. Their latest recording, Three is terrific, but it cannot even come close to matching their live performance. The show was hypnotic. Obviously, if you have no appreciation of anything remotely bluesy, these guys will probably be lost on you, but that would be your loss. John Butler himself is so fascinating that sometimes you forget how talented the other trio boys, bassist Gavin Shoesmith and drummer Jason McGann truly are. Luckily, Butler steps back and lets the attention move to the rest of the band, throughout the show. Together, these three put on one of the most powerful and explosive shows I've ever seen. It was one of those shows that you want to just close your eyes and sway and stamp and and groove to, but you can't stop watching the band actually play. Each song is an epic, the average length being probably around 10 minutes each. Normally, this would be very self-indulgent, but not with these guys. Vocally, John Butler sounds like the love child between Darius Rucker from Hootie & The Blowfish and Dave Matthews. Now, I hope no one will be turned off by my Hootie comment. He has a very good bluesy sound to his singing, but it's not really his voice, but the way he sings, and more importantly, the way he plays, the way he and the rest of the Trio gel together.
